Dr. Matthew Jaurequi

About Me

As a therapist, my primary goal is to help individuals, couples, and families navigate life’s challenges with compassion, empathy, and collaboration. I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental environment where we work together to explore and understand the unique experiences that shape each person’s journey. My approach emphasizes openness and curiosity, allowing clients to uncover their strengths and build resilience.

Therapeutic Approach

Life often presents us with complex challenges, whether through relationship struggles, anxiety, grief, or major life transitions. These difficulties can sometimes feel overwhelming, affecting our emotional, social, and physical well-being. In these moments, having the guidance of a supportive, unbiased professional can make all the difference in finding clarity, healing, and a renewed sense of hope. I offer a range of therapeutic modalities tailored to meet each client’s needs, from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to mindfulness-based interventions, with a focus on creating meaningful and lasting change.

Education and Expertise

I hold both a Master’s and a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy, which provided me with advanced clinical training in scientifically supported therapeutic interventions. My extensive education enables me to address the biological, behavioral, social, and emotional aspects of my clients' well-being.

Clinical Experience

In addition to my private practice, I have had the privilege of working in integrated care settings, including Family Medicine at UC San Diego Health Care and the Behavioral Health Center at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare. These experiences have given me a deep understanding of how physical health and mental health intersect, allowing me to provide more holistic, comprehensive care to my clients.

Scholar-Clinician

I am passionate about bridging the gap between science and practice, particularly in the area of close relationships and their effects on mental and physical health. My research focuses on how romantic relationships and cognitive processes impact well-being, and my work has been featured in top journals like Mindfulness and Journal of Marriage and Family Therapy, where one of my studies was recognized as a "Top Cited Article in 2021-2022." I actively present my findings at national conferences and collaborate with other scholars to translate findings evidence-based approaches to therapy. These research efforts also support public health initiatives aimed at improving relational and mental health outcomes.
