Marriage and Family Therapists & Neuropsychological Testing

In California, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) are permitted to administer and interpret neuropsychological tests as part of their scope of practice. Under California Business and Professions Code §4980.02, LMFTs that possess the necessary education and training can use these assessments for diagnosing emotional, cognitive, and behavioral conditions as part of the diagnosis or assessment of a patient they are actively treating.

Why Test?

Neuropsychological testing offers valuable insights for a range of common issues people often seek help for in therapy, including ADHD, depression, and anxiety. These assessments provide an in-depth look at cognitive functions such as attention, memory, executive functioning, and emotional regulation.

For individuals recovering from traumatic brain injuries (TBI) or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), neuropsychological testing is a critical tool. It helps identify cognitive impairments such as memory loss, concentration difficulties, or emotional dysregulation that are common after a brain injury or trauma.

For example, someone recovering from a concussion may not fully understand why they’re experiencing persistent brain fog or difficulty focusing—neuropsychological assessments can pinpoint the exact cognitive areas impacted and guide a targeted rehabilitation plan. For those dealing with PTSD, testing can illuminate how trauma affects brain function and emotional regulation, helping shape treatment strategies that address both psychological and cognitive recovery.
